Grade 4

The fourth grade forms the fourth year of Elementary school and children enrolled are typically 9 to 10 years old. Subjects taught include English, Math, Science, and Social Studies.
The curriculum for Math includes more complex aspects as compared to the previous year. Students are taught how to calculate factors and multiples of numbers, calculate as well as convert units of measure, and to work with fractions. For English, students are taught a variety of new genres and are introduced to more sophisticate vocabulary. Writing now forms part of students’ daily activities and students are taught different types of punctuation to create sentences.

In Science, students learn about the different scientific processes as well as topics search as motion of objects, electricity and circuits. In Social Studies, a great deal of time is devoted to teaching students about history and geography, customs and traditions, how to behave.

Grade 4 English Curriculum Language Arts

This curriculum follows the Common Core Standards for 4th grade English.
Students in this class are required to read at least 20 minutes every day and to turn in a reading log to show their time spent reading. They are also required to write 10 different book reports in an effort to encourage reading and writing about stories.
To improve their reading skills students will learn how to link prior knowledge to what they are reading, how to determine if information is a first or second hand account, will practice reading nonfiction, and will learn how to make predictions about what will happen next in a story.

Through writing practice students will improve their abilities to paraphrase, write essays, construct a story from idea to finished product, write a play, and write a persuasive essay. Students will be encouraged to visualize what they are reading and writing about, to make connections between stories, and to ask questions about what they read.

Grade-4 Mathematics Course Outline

Our curriculum follows the Common Core Standards for 4th -grade mathematics. The course focuses on three critical areas.
First, students will develop an understanding of multi-digit multiplication and dividing to find multi-digit dividends. In addition, students will expand their understanding of place value to 1,000,000 and the relative sizes of each place. They learn how to apply the correct methods to estimate or mentally calculate products or dividends.

Second, the students will learn to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator and the multiplication of fractions by whole numbers. They also learn that two different fractions can be equal, how to recognize, and how to create them.
Third, the students will understand that geometric figures can be analyzed and classified based on their properties. The students learn how to understand the properties of two-dimensional objects and use them to solve problems about symmetry.

Grade-4 Science Course Outline

This class is aligned with the International Standards for 4th grade science. It covers a variety of scientific topics, some of which have been covered in previous classes and some of which is new material. The students will review matter and its states, atoms and elements, and properties of matter. Students will learn about the special properties of metals, acids, and bases. They will also learn the differences between molecules, compounds, and mixtures. The students will review the solar system, the movement of the Earth, and the contributions of Galileo Galilei to our knowledge of astronomy. The students will learn about minerals and the different types of rocks, as well as investigate the rock cycle.

They will learn the differences between renewable and nonrenewable resources. The students will review the life cycles and characteristics of both plants and animals. The students will learn about energy and the energy that we can harvest from the world around us like solar, heat, wind, and water. The students will explore how you hear, talk, and see, including a study of colors and why we see them. The students will learn about electricity and magnetism, including how they are used and the relationship between the two.

They will explore the differences between speed, velocity, and acceleration. They will also learn about the laws of motion and how they apply to the world around us. The purpose of, and types of, machines will be studied so that students can understand that compound machines they see in lives. The students will also explore the application of scientific knowledge, technology. Finally, the students will review the scientific method and design and conduct their own scientific investigation.

Grade-4 Social Studies Course Outline

Social Studies curriculum offers students their first in depth look at the history. The students will learn about customs and traditions in different areas. Next, they will learn about some European and Asian countries. The students will lean about geography.
